Located on Naifaru, a breathtaking island in the Maldives, this program offers a unique chance for volunteers to engage in meaningful marine conservation work focused on sea turtles. Located within the Lhaviyani Atoll, Naifaru serves as a hub for marine conservation, with the Atoll Marine Centre leading efforts to rehabilitate turtles rescued from ghost nets or illegal captivity.

Volunteers play a key role in the rehabilitation process, gaining hands-on experience in turtle care while contributing to broader marine conservation initiatives. Beyond working with turtles, this program provides an opportunity to immerse in Maldivian culture, explore the island's rich biodiversity, and make a lasting impact on marine conservation efforts.

Guided by experienced marine biologists, participants gain invaluable knowledge about sea turtles and the challenges they face, while learning key conservation strategies. Volunteers also explore the Maldives’ underwater ecosystems through snorkeling and other excursions, making this an impactful and unforgettable experience.

Activities & Training

As a volunteer in the Turtle Rehabilitation Program, you will immerse yourself first hand in marine conservation work. Activities include cleaning and feeding rescued turtles, maintaining their tanks, and collecting seagrass for our resident green sea turtle. You'll also take part in rehabilitation swims for turtles and organize beach clean-ups to help restore local ecosystems.

Working alongside our resident marine biologists, you'll gain practical skills in turtle husbandry and marine conservation while contributing to ongoing efforts to protect these incredible creatures. Additional activities include leading tours for resort guests, conducting beach surveys, and creating educational materials for community outreach.

Training is provided on-site, ensuring you are fully equipped to handle daily tasks and understand the broader impact of your work. You'll learn about turtle biology, conservation techniques, and local environmental challenges from experienced marine biologists. Interactive workshops, snorkeling excursions, and opportunities to engage with the local community provide a holistic understanding of marine conservation. Volunteers are encouraged to share ideas and collaborate on projects, making this a rewarding and educational experience.

Why Participate

Participating in the Turtle Rehabilitation Program offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on marine conservation while experiencing the rich culture of the Maldives. You'll explore the 'real' Maldives, from bustling local islands to uninhabited atolls, while working alongside passionate ocean lovers. Location

What is around?

The island of Naifaru, located in the Lhaviyani Atoll, is a bustling hub dotted with some 120 shops and markets, selling everything from local handicrafts, souvenirs, and consumer goods. There is a post office and a bank (with an ATM) at your disposal, as well as a variety of coffee shops and restaurants, which mostly serve dishes native to Southeast Asian cuisine.

The Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital is located in Naifaru and always has doctors on duty. There is also a well-equipped pharmacy next to the hospital which caters to your basic needs. You will also find a fire station and a newly built police station only a few minutes from the volunteer house. Given the relatively small size of the island, everything is within easy reach. You can walk from the volunteer house to any of our projects in less than ten minutes.
