Overview

Naifaru, the main island of Lhaviyani Atoll in the northern Maldives, is home to around 6,000 residents and is renowned for its joyful community and rich marine biodiversity. Surrounded by one of the most transparent waters and stunning coral reefs, the island provides the perfect setting for coral restoration work.

This program offers volunteers the unique opportunity to contribute directly to the restoration of coral reefs. Guided by marine conservationists, participants gain hands-on experience working on both coral nurseries and artificial reef structures, supporting the recovery of coral ecosystems at the island’s house reef.

This program is ideal for conservation enthusiasts eager to learn coral restoration techniques or ocean lovers who wish to interact with coral reefs sustainably. Beyond conservation activities, volunteers can enjoy the island’s lively atmosphere, relax on pristine beaches, snorkel nearby reefs, and experience authentic Maldivian culture. With local shops, restaurants, and community life blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of the atoll, Naifaru offers both comfort and adventure in one of the world’s most breathtaking marine environments.

Activities & Training

As a volunteer in the Coral Restoration Program, you’ll take part in hands-on activities that directly contribute to reef recovery. These include maintaining and expanding coral nurseries, working on artificial reef structures, cleaning and attaching coral fragments, and participating in coral identification workshops both above and below water. You’ll also learn how to collect scientific data, conduct coral and fish surveys, and take part in weekly conservation efforts such as Dive Against Debris clean-up dives. Beyond restoration work, volunteers often engage in beach clean-ups, snorkeling surveys, and educational outreach to raise awareness about marine conservation.

All participants receive on-site training and guidance from experienced marine biologists and dive professionals. Through the Reef Guru Coral Restoration Diver course, you’ll gain practical skills in coral gardening, reef monitoring, and sustainable diving practices. Non-divers have the opportunity to complete their PADI Open Water Course, and those who wish can add extra specialties like Fish ID or Coral Watch. This combination of fieldwork, workshops, and diving ensures you leave with both valuable conservation skills and a deeper understanding of the challenges facing coral reefs in the Maldives.

Why Participate

Joining the Coral Restoration Program is a chance to make a tangible difference in one of the planet’s most fragile ecosystems. Coral reefs face increasing threats from climate change, pollution, and overfishing, and your contribution directly supports their recovery and long-term survival. By assisting with coral gardening, reef monitoring, and clean-up initiatives, you become an active part of the solution, helping restore biodiversity and protect marine life that depends on healthy reefs. Your involvement also strengthens the work of the Atoll Volunteers team, whose projects rely on the dedication and passion of volunteers to thrive.

Beyond conservation, this program is an opportunity for personal growth, cultural exchange, and unforgettable experiences. You’ll learn new diving and research skills, explore the underwater beauty of the Maldives, and immerse yourself in the daily life of a Maldivian island community.

Location

What is around?

The island of Naifaru, located in the Lhaviyani Atoll, is a bustling hub dotted with some 120 shops and markets, selling everything from local handicrafts, souvenirs, and consumer goods. There is a post office and a bank (with an ATM) at your disposal, as well as a variety of coffee shops and restaurants, which mostly serve dishes native to Southeast Asian cuisine.

The Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital is located in Naifaru and always has doctors on duty. There is also a well-equipped pharmacy next to the hospital which caters to your basic needs. You will also find a fire station and a newly built police station only a few minutes from the volunteer house. Given the relatively small size of the island, everything is within easy reach. You can walk from the volunteer house to any of our projects in less than ten minutes.

How to get there?
