Program Details
Activities & Training
Throughout the program, you will engage in a wide range of conservation and eco-tourism activities that balance adventure with education. Key activities include shark cage diving operations, where you will work alongside experienced crews, assisting with equipment setup, guest interactions, and shark spotting. You’ll also have the unique opportunity to dive with great white sharks, gaining firsthand experience in marine wildlife observation and eco-tourism.
In addition to the diving operations, you'll attend marine biology presentations, where experts will teach you about shark behavior, tagging techniques, and ocean conservation efforts. These educational sessions provide crucial knowledge on marine ecosystems and the challenges they face, giving you valuable insight into ongoing conservation work.
Beyond the water-based activities, you will also participate in whale watching, observing southern right whales and other marine species like dolphins and seals. These excursions offer a deeper understanding of the area's rich marine biodiversity and the importance of sustainable wildlife tourism.
Moreover, you will assist in the rehabilitation of African penguins and seabirds at a local sanctuary, helping care for these injured animals and supporting their eventual release back into the wild. Kleinbaai is an ideal destination for those seeking adventure, relaxation, or a blend of both, offering a variety of exciting activities and natural attractions. A visit here wouldn't be complete without experiencing shark cage diving, as Kleinbaai is renowned for close encounters with great white sharks—an adrenaline rush unlike any other. For a more serene yet awe-inspiring experience, take a whale-watching boat tour during the southern right whale breeding season from June to November. Kleinbaai’s beautiful beaches, including De Kelders Beach, Pearly Beach, and Danger Point, offer perfect spots to relax, swim, and enjoy the coastal views.
Hiking enthusiasts can explore Walker Bay Nature Reserve, where trails wind through unique fynbos vegetation and lead to spectacular coastal views; the Klipgat Cave Trail, in particular, is a must-see, taking hikers to a historic cave once used by the Khoisan people. Nearby, the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine region beckons with some of South Africa's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—perfect for a day trip of wine tasting and sampling the area’s culinary delights.
How to get there?
You will need to fly to Cape Town International Airport. Please arrive on a Sunday, as the project starts on Monday. You will spend one night in Cape Town at your own expense. We can arrange an airport pick up transfer for you at an extra cost if desired. You will then be collected from your accommodation in Cape Town on Monday morning and taken to the project. This could be as early as 4 am. The exact pick-up time will be communicated to you at least 1 day prior.
Return transfers are usually scheduled with drop-offs late on a Monday afternoon/early evening. If you have booked a flight after 9 pm on Monday, you should be fine, otherwise you need to stay an extra night in Cape Town at your own expense and fly out on a Tuesday.

- Ranger has to be a minimum of 18 years of age on the day of the start of the program
- Be in good physical condition and able to swim
- A good knowledge of the English language
- Must have visa, travel and health insurance before arrival in South Africa
- A passport valid for 6 months after the date of return
