In this program, you will actively participate in marine conservation by collecting vital photographic data on turtles, rays, and other marine life, contributing to important research on endangered species. You’ll also learn coral reef monitoring techniques to help safeguard these ecosystems for future generations.
Sodwana Bay is home to some of the southernmost coral reefs in the world, and through this program, you’ll be part of a dedicated community working to preserve this unique environment. Alongside daily diving, you’ll attend marine conservation lectures to deepen your understanding of ocean ecosystems.

Program Details
Activities & Training
This program immerses you in essential marine conservation efforts, combining practical experience and educational activities to protect marine ecosystems.
You’ll begin with daily dives focused on collecting photographic data on species like turtles, manta rays, and nudibranchs. These dives allow you to contribute directly to research on endangered marine life while sharpening your underwater photography and observation skills. Following each dive, you'll participate in data entry sessions where you’ll learn how to organize and input valuable information into marine research databases. This hands-on experience is crucial in helping monitor and understand the health of coral reefs in the area.
In addition to diving, you’ll attend engaging lectures led by local zoologists. These sessions cover topics like coral reef ecology, marine species behavior, and the threats facing ocean ecosystems today. You'll also learn reef monitoring techniques to identify environmental changes affecting marine biodiversity.
For those new to diving, the program includes the opportunity to complete your PADI Open Water or Advanced Open Water certification, equipping you with the skills to dive safely. On land, you’ll have the chance to explore the surrounding coastal forests and participate in turtle conservation activities, helping protect vital nesting sites for endangered species like loggerhead and leatherback turtles.
This well-rounded program combines active conservation work with educational experiences, ensuring that you leave with new skills and a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems.

Sodwana Bay offers a range of exciting activities, from world-class scuba diving and snorkeling among coral reefs to beach fun like sunbathing, horseback riding, and quad biking. June to November brings opportunities for whale watching, while nearby iSimangaliso Wetland Park invites visitors for nature hikes through diverse ecosystems. Turtle nesting tours offer a chance to see loggerhead and leatherback turtles during the season, and cultural tours in Mbazwana provide insights into Zulu traditions. Nearby attractions like Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve and St. Lucia Wetlands make for excellent day trips, adding to the rich experiences available in Sodwana Bay.
How to get there?
You need to arrive at the King Shaka Durban Airport, served through the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. There you will be collected by the volunteer staff, transport is provided on both your arrival and departure

Requirements
- Ranger has to be a minimum of 18 years of age on the day of the start of the program
- Be in good physical condition and able to swim
- A good knowledge of the English language
- Must have visa, travel and health insurance before arrival in South Africa
- A passport valid for 6 months after the date of return
