Overview

Madagascar’s coral reefs are among the planet's most diverse and well preserved underwater ecosystems. These sanctuaries support a wide variety of marine species, from megafauna to vibrant reef fish, intricate invertebrates, and essential microorganisms. Located around Nosy Komba and Nosy Be, the coral reefs play a crucial role in Madagascar’s ecological balance, offering homes for countless marine creatures, protecting the coastline, and providing livelihoods through fishing and tourism.

The MRCI Coral Program focuses on protecting these delicate environments through targeted conservation projects. Volunteers are trained to carry out detailed reef surveys, which help gather valuable data needed to track coral health, biodiversity, and bleaching events. The program gives participants the skills to recognize marine species, observe ecological changes, and support efforts to restore damaged coral ecosystems. By tackling issues like overfishing, climate change, and pollution, the Coral Program aims to ensure a sustainable future for Madagascar’s incredible marine ecosystems.

Program Details

Activities & Training

As part of the MRCI Coral Program, your day begins after breakfast, with activities typically starting around 8:00 AM. One of the key focuses will be participating in reef surveys, where you’ll dive to assess and monitor the health and biodiversity of the coral reef ecosystem. These surveys involve studying fish, invertebrates, and coral species, helping to track ecological changes and overall reef vitality.

During the mid-day, activities may include beach cleanups to tackle marine debris and the creation of eco-bricks as part of sustainability efforts. Volunteers also engage in collaborative projects with partners such as the Indian Ocean Monitoring Commission and local initiatives aimed at protecting and restoring coral reefs and their surrounding ecosystems. Training sessions are an integral part of the program and cover essential skills such as identifying marine wildlife and conducting coral baseline surveys. These sessions provide the knowledge and methodologies needed for effective reef conservation, equipping you with valuable skills to contribute to long-term preservation efforts.

Through these activities, you’ll be actively involved in conserving Nosy Komba and Nosy Be’s coral reefs, ensuring a meaningful contribution to global marine conservation initiatives.

Why Participate

Joining the MRCI Coral Program is an extraordinary chance to play an active role in preserving Madagascar’s unique marine ecosystems while acquiring valuable skills and experience. As a volunteer, you will contribute directly to critical conservation efforts, collaborating with respected organizations such as the Indian Ocean Monitoring Commission and other local and international partners. These partnerships enable the collection of essential data for long-term reef monitoring and ecosystem preservation.

Your work will focus on vital community-based initiatives aimed at protecting seagrass meadows, conserving marine habitats, and ensuring the sustainability of fragile ecosystems. Projects include coral reef restoration in the Marine Protected Area near Turtle Cove camp, engaging in beach cleanups, and supporting mangrove planting efforts.

Volunteers receive comprehensive training in marine species identification, including fish, corals, turtles, and invertebrates, along with hands-on practice in coral baseline surveying methodologies. These skills are essential for contributing effectively to marine conservation efforts and will equip you with the tools to monitor coral reef health and biodiversity.

Participating in this program allows you to make a meaningful impact while deepening your understanding of marine ecosystems and their conservation. Be part of the mission to safeguard our oceans for future generations while embarking on a transformative experience that blends learning, action, and environmental stewardship.

Location

What is around?

On the island of Nosy Komba, explore the village of Ampangorina for local shops selling textiles and arts and crafts. You can also pick up some vanilla extract at the local markets. Savour the freshly caught seafood at one of the local restaurants, and enjoy drinks at the local bars on the beach. Go kayaking in Ampangorina village, or take a boat tour around Nosy Komba and see other villages located on the island.

A must-see destination is the Lokobe Strict Reserve, located on the island of Nosy Be, where you can spot black, Hawk’s sportive and mouse lemurs and, if you are lucky, a leaf-tailed gecko, only found in the Nosy Komba area. Lokobe is also home to the Madagascar pigmy kingfisher, panther chameleons, endemic frogs and snakes.

Visit the remote Mamoko island, a small island with a big personality and tradition to match. This island still has a monarchy in place, with a Queen as head of the population. You can tour the island’s village (by paying a fee) and gaze at the island’s stars, the lemurs living amidst the villagers, and a 100-year-old tortoise.

Visit the Nosy Iranja Archipelago, made up of two small islets, Nosy Iranja Be and Nosy Iranja Kely, permanently tethered to one another by a string of sand at low tide. Nosy Iranja Be, the biggest of the two, hosts a small fishermen village and a suggestive abandoned lighthouse designed by Gustav Eiffel. Nosy Iranja Kely’s white beaches are important nesting grounds for hawksbill and green sea turtles, and hidden in the verdant vegetation are numerous bird species and giant coconut crabs.

Visit the villages along the Bararahamay river, famous for their blacksmiths, boat builders and their wild honey. Here you may also spot the rare Madagascar fish eagle.

How to get there?

You should aim to arrive in Nosy Be before 3pm on the Sunday before the start date in order to be transferred via boat to Turtle Cove before the start of the program on Monday. If you are arriving on Saturday or earlier, you will need to arrive prior to 1pm in order to be transferred to camp that day. If you are required to stay in Nosy Be for a night, please book a hotel in Hellville. The local team will make arrangements to meet you the next day and transport you across to camp.

There are several airlines that fly to Madagascar: Air Austral flies via Reunion to Nosy Be; Air Ethiopia flies via Addis Ababa to Nosy Be; Air France; Tsaradia Airlines for domestic flights from Antananarivo to Nosy Be.
