Program Details

Activities & Training

This program provides a dynamic and immersive experience in marine conservation, focusing on Reef Health Monitoring, Coral Gardening, Larval Propagation, and Community Integration. Participants will start with Reef Health Monitoring, using advanced techniques like photo quadrats and the AGRRA methodology to evaluate coral composition, diversity, and the condition of fish and invertebrate communities in the southeastern Dominican Republic. These assessments are crucial for tracking the health of the reefs and formulating effective restoration strategies.

In Coral Gardening, participants will work hands-on in one of the eight established coral nurseries, cultivating Acropora cervicornis in a protected environment. These nurseries, supported by local businesses and diving centers, play a key role in large-scale restoration efforts, highlighted by the annual Coral Mania event, where volunteers help transplant nursery-grown corals back to the reefs.

The program also delves into Larval Propagation, where participants will assist in the collection of gametes, and the process of fertilization, and the rearing of coral recruits. These recruits are then seeded in reef rehabilitation areas to promote genetic diversity and enhance coral resilience.

Finally, the Community Integration aspect of the program involves engaging the local community through awareness activities, training young people as marine restoration technicians, and hosting events like the Lionfish fishing tournament and Coral Mania. This ensures that conservation efforts are sustainable and have a lasting impact on preserving marine ecosystems.

Why Participate

Participating in this program provides a unique opportunity to make a direct impact on marine conservation while gaining hands-on experience in vital restoration techniques. You'll contribute to the preservation of coral reefs in the Dominican Republic, learning skills in reef monitoring, coral gardening, and larval propagation alongside experts and fellow volunteers.

This experience not only enhances your understanding of marine ecosystems but also connects you to a community dedicated to raising awareness and protecting our oceans for future generations.
